Farrier Service Objectives

 

 Jerry Linker offers the following knowledge, skills and abilities to the Equine Community in your area. 

Working knowledge of limb and hoof anatomy.  Able to both effectively comprehend and communicate concerning the inner workings of the equine limb and hoof.  In addition to this Jerry has a working knowledge of effective medical treatments for specific limb or hoof disorders (gained from previous years of experience while working concomitantly with some of the most renowned Equine Vets in the industry).  This knowledge base allows Jerry to therapeutically shoe these problems as well as play a supporting role to other specialists treating lameness issues.

 

Over twenty year’s movement improvement experience.  Jerry pinpoints movement issues which keep horses from achieving the top of their game.  Through the years, many Equine Athletes benefited and won World Championships as a direct result of Jerry’s Farrier knowledge and abilities.

 Has the maturity and organization to make and keep appointments; coinciding a schedule with other professionals he may be performing work for.

 

Offers quality work that is aesthetically pleasing as well as structurally sound.  Jerry offers over thirty years Farrier experience which includes working with any and all types and breeds as well as any type of sport an Equine may be involved in.  Having a working knowledge of the specific shoeing requirements dictated by various associations.   Jerry’s basic Farrier skills include sound principles having consistent nail patterns, well set shoes, shoes set to the foot not the foot to the shoe, cup in foot, finishing touches that give a pleasing appearance, no hangovers on any part of the shoe where a horse could reach up and snag a shoe, smooth clinches, work guaranteed…work that truly is artistic as well as practical using up to date techniques and ideas.

 Jerry offers expert horse handling experience with over 40 years experience.  A master level knowledge of horses and their nature gives Jerry the ability to work with situations that could be considered dangerous or difficult.

Performed the initial Master Therapeutic Farrier work on previously unsuccessful Equine Competitors having no AQHA points.  Two weeks after Jerry therapeutically shod these horses they became circuit champions at sanctioned AQHA Shows.  Several went on to achieve their R.O.M. within 90 days of using Jerry as the Therapeutic Farrier.

Performed work on one mare which had not placed at a show in two years.  After Jerry’s initial work she became the AQHA Circuit Champion and sold at the Congress for $30,000.  This was less than 60 days after Jerry’s Therapeutic work.

Worked on chronically lame mare; a daughter of “Zippo Mr. Good Bar”.  After Jerry’s therapeutic work she became circuit champion at six shows in one year while eventually selling for $40,000.

Worked on a filly with chronic lameness issues.  After spending five thousand dollars with Veterinarians in less than three months the owners decided to employ Jerry’s Farrier expertise.  After Jerry’s work she won the N.C. Futurity; selling that week for $50,000.  She went on to receive her AQHA Superior R.O.M. Championship and sold overseas for $150,000 that same year.

Farrier Experience Highlights

Experience:  Founder/Instructor NC School of Horseshoeing & Equine Lameness (1995-Current) has been training consecutively for over twelve years.

 

Accomplishment:  Trained over six hundred Farriers worldwide including Israel, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Australia, as well as the U.S.  Each Farrier trained to shoe with his particular style and techniques; specifically training in lameness/corrective work.

 

Subsequent Results:   Jerry continues to be the consulting Master Therapeutic Limb & Hoof Specialist for Farriers nationwide while in their various fields of labor.  Farriers trained by Jerry continue to perform at the top of their industry working concomitantly with local and state Equine Vets.  They continue to seek his counsel, expertise and training; having personally experienced his vast knowledge.

 

Experience:  Founder/President Eastcoast Horseshoer’s Assoc. (1996-Current) which is the only association whose standards are based on Jerry’s shoeing techniques and improving movement in performance horses.

 

Accomplishments:  Master Farrier Certifier for Farriers completing courses through the N.C. School of Horseshoeing & Equine Lameness.

Experience: Farrier for Auburn University working concomitantly with Dr. Fred Shell (early 70’s)

 

Accomplishments: Worked successfully with Dr. Shell on many founder/lameness cases. Jerry’s corrective work consisted of performing shoeing that only master Farriers are capable of doing.  As a respected Farrier Jerry received a request by Dr. Shell asking him to design a technique for the Auburn University Veterinarian Department.  This technique was to address foundered horse issues, with the goal to make them as comfortable as possible.

 

Subsequent Results:  This technique researched and designed by Jerry Linker for Foundered Horses was used extensively and successfully by Dr. Shell and Auburn University.  Through these experiences Jerry emerged with great knowledge, experience and techniques which were designed to stop founder in its early stages.  This technique also provides hoof support and comfort in the case of rotation thus providing foundered equine a greatly improved quality of life.  In the early stages of acute laminitis, this technique, if followed, proved it would allow a horse to return to soundness.

 

Experience Worked concurrently with Dr. Alex Harthill (late 70’s).

Dr. Harthill (Of Church Hill Downs)  A renowned Veterinarian who worked on major race tracks in the U.S.   Dr Harthill did paddock 27 Kentucky Derby winners. He was world renowned for his outstanding work in helping race horses recover from serious injuries and then return to racing with great success.

 

Accomplishments: Assisted Dr. Harthill in his race track work for approximately 1 year.

 

Subsequent Results: Gained intensive therapeutic knowledge through his work with Dr. Harthill; such as a knowledge of techniques that allow him to pinpoint lameness issues that are seemingly impossible to find.

Experience:  Performed Farrier Work for Texas A & M  University and Dr. Bowen ( late 70’s)

More recently Jerry…

· Has continued his work as Master Farrier and Therapeutic Specialist while beginning what he considers his biggest adventure of all by marrying his wife Karen Virrey, beginning a family together that now composes of 5 daughters.  Daughters who hope to follow his legacy with horses.  Together with his wife, Karen, he founded the Stony Mountain American Sport Horse Farm; breeding and producing one of the top stallions in the nation “Lethal Weapon” who won the gold at his inspection while finishing 5th overall in the nation.

Previously Jerry…

· Was the chosen Farrier for the Argentina Equine Olympic Team (1975-76) Combined Training

· Was involved in the 1975 Bicentennial Year Reenactment Activities for the city of Charlotte, NC.

· Jerry was chosen out of five thousand applicants to portray the historical re-enactment of the famous ride of “Captain Jack”. (Captain Jack originally rode on horse back to Philadelphia delivering the Mecklenburg Declaration)  Jerry was chosen for his horsemanship, riding and spokesman abilities. He both trained and shod the horse he rode; an Arabian named “Sharek”.   Jerry received many awards due to his part in our nation’s Bicentennial Celebrations.

· He was given the keys to 20 cities

· Jerry was guest of honor at a dinner with President Ford following his “Captain Jack” ride in honor of Mecklenburg County.

·  He was interviewed on the Mike Douglas Show for his participation in the re-enactment.

· During this experience Jerry gained an extensive working history with the media; being quoted by numerous newspapers and television reporters.

·  Rode for the Cancer Society in 1975. His ride made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest horseback ride ever recorded; he also earned $36,000 for the American Cancer Society.

· As a result Jerry was presented the Outstanding Citizenship award by Governor Wallace for his ride for the American Cancer Society. This made him the youngest citizen in America ever to receive this award; Jerry was only 21 years old

· Owned and managed Grey Fox Farms in 1970’s.  It was one of the top competing show barns in NC during the 70s.  Also the home of World Champion Stallions such as Joker’s Wild and Sundance Sport Fury.
